Konichiwa, bitches: We got our SXSW house… 7 months early.

As of August 30, there wasn’t a single hotel available* for SXSWi. No hotels for an event that won’t happen for another 7 months? It’s especially strange because no one I know is going to SXSWi.**

Sure, we’re all going to Austin. After all, SXSWi is holiday for people from San Francisco to go to Austin to talk about people from San Francisco.*** And many of us are buying a badge – though many of you said you’re not bothering – or you’re having it comped (like me), or getting a free one because you agreed to sit on your friend’s panel about lean startup approaches to pivoting mobile web apps about dolphins, or whatever.

But mostly, we’re going to Austin so we can show up at the unofficial and/or unlisted events like last year’s Google Lego Hackathon I helped out with (Boris and Chris get the real credit for making that happen). Oh, and the kickbacks at awesome houses/hotels, like the one our group of misfits just reserved:

And inside:

Oh, there’s a rooftop deck:

We’re all heading to SXSWi for the same reasons.**** Might as well do it in style.

I’m dubbing this the “Konichiwa, Bitches” house as that’s how I began the now over-a-dozen-emails thread to get this house secured. I looked at ~20 different options, put in bids for about 5, and finally got this house after courting the owner for two weeks. It’s absurd how packed the housing situation is this year, and it makes me worry that we’ll have more than our fair share of the elite obnoxious at SXSWi 2012.

Oh wait, I have a roof deck. I don’t care.

See you all at that party we all agree we don’t want to go to, but ultimately will show up at!

*Within a reasonable distance to anything I want to be by, that is.

**Well, except for the 20k+ registered attendees. As a conference/event organizer, I want to punch myself in the face whenever I think about how early they’re selling out/filling hotels. Goddamn, am I jealous of the SXSW team. Well done, you hard-working, talented sons of bitches.

***Yes, I know amazing startups come from all over (Seattle, NYC, Philly, LA, Canada, Israel, France, and on and on), but let’s not deny there’s a serious Silicon Valley/Bay Area bias at these events.

****Glory, promotion, business deals… stickers.
